Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the General Manager of Ice and Sports Operation, this position is responsible for the planning, organizing, scheduling, and promoting a variety of ice skating programs to meet the recreation and competitive needs of the community. This position is also responsible for basic maintenance and directly supervising facility staff. Assumes overall control and responsibility of the operations of the hockey office and the facilities in the absence of the General Manager. Facilitates guest relations, registration functions, coach and parent education, inventory management, and budget accountability. Inspires and motivates a team of professional staff, and is committed to our vision of creating a community where everyone participates in recreational experiences that engage, inspire, and enrich lives.

Essential Duties:

  • Plans, organizes, schedules, and supervises an extensive program of recreational ice skating activities including but not limited to: general public skating sessions, youth and adult hockey programs and special events. Assists with the registration and publicity of learn-to-skate, figure skating sessions, hockey leagues, camps, tournaments and clinics. Oversees the master ice schedule for the facility.
  • Demonstrates a high level of customer service; encouraging others to focus on the customer; foster an environment where customer service is a priority.
  • Demonstrates integrity and builds trust through credibility, reliability, commitment, loyalty, and ethical behavior.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with District employees, vendors, and various outside user groups to coordinate programs and special events.
  • Regularly attends public sessions, clinics, tournaments, competitions and special events that fall under the span and scope of supervision which may be outside a normal schedule.
  • Directly oversees the hockey leagues and works closely with the ice user groups in providing effective oversight and leadership; fostering cooperative working relationships between the user groups and facility staff.
  • Maintains a positive working relationship with all facility departments and their staff. Demonstrates support for team efforts by accepting new roles and responsibilities, and helping others achieve objectives.
  • Develops, implements, and tracks results of all marketing strategies to ensure the utilization; notifies the public of District events. Promotes a positive image to the public. Participates in community planning and organizational meetings. Prepares information for the District catalog.
  • Promotes and markets ice rentals. Schedules ice programs including tournaments and all special events.
  • Hires, trains, schedules, supervises and evaluates assigned staff; provides or coordinates staff training; and works with employees to correct deficiencies.
  • Prepares and monitors the budget, manages revenues and expenditures and prepares financial reports. Negotiates concession contracts. Prepares purchase orders, RFP’s, and invoice requests. Prepares short and long-range revenue/expenditure projections, checks revenue streams, etc. Develops and implements strategies to increase usage of assigned areas. Calculates program fees to meet cost-recovery goals. Formulates comprehensive business plans by researching and analyzing market information is essential.
  • Prepares, enforces, maintains and modifies policies and procedures manuals; conducts periodic staff meetings to provide and gather information, answers questions and respond to complaints and concerns, both internally and externally.
  • Serves as an advisor and host for specialized and private groups that are utilizing the facility and aids in technical matters.
  • Determines community needs by evaluating programs and activities; makes recommendations for improvement and future development and implements changes.
  • Maintains records and provides reports as directed, including daily cash deposits, accounts payable and receivable, weekly department reports, attendance reports, program and personnel reports.
  • Ensures all monies collected for the ice facility are handled according to District policy.
  • Must be able to perform ice makes as needed on the Zamboni.
  • Initiates, develops, and maintains a safety program for the ice facility with emphasis on emergency first aid procedures and treatment, as well as the proper reporting of accidents and injuries.
  • Inspects and supervises the facility to determine adequate adherence to generally recognized standards including the areas of quality of leadership, program content, cleanliness, and safety. Performs daily walk-throughs of the facility and coordinates with the maintenance staff supervisor for repairs.
  • Maintains accurate inventories including building equipment and program supplies.
  • Purchases supplies and equipment for the ice facility and its program according to District policy. Model and encourage all employees to demonstrate ownership in support of the District by fostering a collegial and supportive work environment.
  • Values learning and increases knowledge as the position grows and changes.
  • Complies with District and departmental rules and regulations, policies and procedures. Consistently demonstrates high ethical standards, good communication, and a professional appearance.
  • Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of recreational services as well as various athletic interests and markets to facilitate off-season utilization.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings, trainings, and orientations.
  • Attend work on a regular, reliable and punctual basis.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Physical Education, Business or other closely related field. Five (5) or more years of rink management experience may be considered in lieu of Bachelor’s degree.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience working in a supervisory position at an ice skating facility or other similar position and a minimum of two (2) years of experience in a supervisory role. Experience in an administrative position operating a youth or adult hockey league is preferred.
  • A combination of experience and education may be considered.

Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:

  • CPR, First Aid and AED certificates, or the ability to obtain upon hire required.
  • Training in current Youth Sports issues including parent, coach and/or officials is preferred. Any other related certifications are preferred.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver License or the ability to obtain upon hire and maintain an acceptable driving record.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of all aspects of community ice skating programs including operation, maintenance and programming.
  • Must understand the general philosophy of recreation and its application to ice skating programs.
  • Knowledge of basic techniques and methodology of organizing groups in a recreation setting.
  • Ability to audit cash flow and daily cash reports with accuracy and proper handling in adherence to established procedures and tactfully investigate and resolve issues.
  • The ability to interpret and evaluate work of staff effectively.
  • Skilled in training, communications and public relations.
  • Must be highly motivated and take direction well with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbally.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team in a fast-paced and high volume environment with emphasis on accuracy and timeliness.
  • Ability to provide outstanding customer service and get along with coworkers, patrons, and supervisors and interact with employees and vendors in a professional manner.

Material and Equipment Used :

To successfully perform the required job duties, this position regularly uses a phone, computer, printer, fax and other office equipment. This position also regularly operates a Zamboni and a hand held two way radio. This position is required to drive a Zamboni and a motor vehicle to various District facilities.

Working Environment :

This position primarily works in a busy office environment located in a loud Recreation Complex and office environment subject to continuous interruptions and background noises. The employee is exposed to wet, cold and slippery conditions. Will be working in a cool environment; the temperature at the ice rink(s) will vary from 40-55 degrees Fahrenheit. Occasionally works outside subject to variable weather conditions, ecosystems and landscape.

Physical Requirements :

Stand, walk, handle and operate objects and office equipment, reach outward and above shoulder and carry, pull, push or lift up to 25 lbs. May occasionally ice skate, climb, crawl, kneel and lift up to 50 lbs. The employee must be able to see close up and at a distance with vision acuity and the ability to adjust focus allowing a broad field of vision. The employee must communicate clearly and effectively, must understand and be understood.

Must have a Motor Vehicle Operator’s license valid in the state of Missouri.
Must be at least twenty-one (21) years old.
Must be able to work nights, weekends and holidays as required.
Must be able to physically participate in recreation programs and activities.
First Aid and CPR certification or obtain within sixty (60) days of employment.
